Nelson on the South Island averages 2500 hours of sunshine per year - that's almost 7 hours a day, so you can almost guarantee good weather. It's also about 30 minutes away from the Abel Tasman national park, so a great place to get out and see some fantastic scenery. We took sea kayaks out from Kaiteriteri and paddled up to the park with some American girls and a guy with one leg. Strange but true.
After kayaking North for about 5 hours we were left with about 2 hours to get back and we were all shattered. But Gloria, our guide brought out a sail and tied it to the paddles and we rafted our three kayaks together and sailed back.
